new logo designs

This is the logo for the new pet service business my wife and I are starting. Focusing on pet walking, waste removal and getting the legalities for home made dog treats taken care of.

i have been working on a fair amount of logos recently. a couple of those projects have finished up and i am pretty pleased with the logos that have come out of it.
one is for a business that my wife and i are starting called Save N Sound Pet Services.
the other is for a new record label being started by a concert promoter sean healy who has 15 years exp in LA.

This is a design i am working on. This is a piece i have reworked from one of my pen names, where i use my opposite hand to draw with so it is a more crude and imperfect line. The line has been thickened and cleaned up a bit so it is a bit more graphically appeasing. Not sure if this is too scary for a kids shirt, or if people won't get the analogy. The title of the piece is called "Risks". This is also the first color version, staying with the kids shirt concept i kept the colors bright and almost primary and complimentary. The blue background would be the color of the shirt.

this is a concept progress for a illustration for a piece of poetry. The characters and background were drawn seperate. The piece will be colored in photoshop line art is not so important, the finishing can be done with the wacom in psd. So I have just the pencils, and background issues with white and paper color are not important.

It has been decided to take out the bolt text on the front and go with a diff text treatment, but it allows all the artwork to be shown. this is without the new or old text treatment, but close to the new, the text is a lot smaller.

I have not updated in awhile, i have been working. I have been bustin my ass! But all for good. I am trying to make a new job work, along with my friend and her friends who have put this wonderful thing together. I can not upload work yet, but i can share the link that ginah has given me on the news paper article that was done on the new magazine that is coming out.

I am basically working two jobs right now, my day job and then come home and do the magazine at night. My workouts in the gym have suffered, but this is more important. Especially in this time of job uncertainty. And of course my job well falls into the area of "At Risk". In reality i walk into work each day wondering when they are just going to tell me to go home. So all my extra efforts and energies are going to make all the work I do for the magazine rock!

Well I have work to do right now. But I want to try and keep with posting. Try and get new images up and in view that I am working on or have worked on. I am happy that I have work to do right now, even though that is after I have gotten off of work. I have multiple illustrations that I have to get done in two weeks. I am not super worried about getting the work done, but I am wondering how much detail I can cram in within the time period. I guess the detail worry is in the coloring. I am going to be using photoshop, as that is what I feel I render best in. If I had the ability to just not do anything but explore painting techniques I would, but I have responsibilities I have to tend to. I like painting but it is not the affect I want for this.

I am really excited about the project. It is a cover and internal illustrations for a new magazine coming out in Las Vegas on the cities life and culture. I was brought into this project by a good friend I use to work with at Applause while doing toy design. I am not going to divulge any details on the cover art or concept until I am given the ok.

Sorry I got a little carried away. The piece I have attached to the blog is a recent piece that I did for a good friend down in Seattle for one of his poems. We have been working together on quite a few creative projects lately and with some great results. This work is for a poem called "Phallic" I will get the ok from Jonathan to upload the poem.

send in the clowns pt 1

Well like it or not I have always been facinated by clowns. People hate them, are frightened or terrified by them. Well that is what works for me. I never went to the circus growing up, so my only interface with clowns is through TV or print media. I went to a circus once in college to use for the opportunity to take photos for a photography class I was taking, but no real clown shots were taken.

I went through a phase where I was experiencing a artist block. I could not think of what to draw, so I used my movies on pause to do quick sketches of the screen shots. I really spent a lot of time working with weird clown movies. Favs that I worked from would be "Killer Clowns From Outer Space", "Funhouse", "IT", "Clown At Midnight" and "Shakes The Clown" with maybe some others in there I can't think of. Once the quick pencil was done I used Tria markers to do the color rendering. This was also while I was doing Toy Design at Applause, before they collapsed. So this was also a great exercise for marker rendering.
I will be uploading these in sets.

Fantasy Warriors and Magic - Illustrations

In the time before I had started my professional career I spent a lot of my time either taking part in sports activities I enjoyed or working on my artwork.

In the time after high school I really wanted to work in the comic industry, and that eventually was my first professional art job. I worked as a digital colorist for Malibu Comics, which was then bought out by Marvel. Then Marvel shut the house down and shipped all the work to Ireland because it was cheaper. So right after I went to Klasky Chupo to do character Design for Duckman. Which was a whole different story. But that gig was short lived and I ended up doing freelance comic coloring from someone I worked and Malibu/Marvel with.

In the time before that job I focused a lot on my illustration detail and characters complexity. I used a set of Rapideograph pens to ink my pencils. I usually spent most of my day and well into the night riding my bike from place to place spending hours drawing and drinking coffee. In the 90's Ventura had a nice selection of living room style coffee houses. These were great environments for paying little for coffee and spending large amounts of time there. Which allowed for me to focus on the detail I wanted to put into my drawings, potential portfolio.

The first piece of the witch and cat was from 93 and the second was after getting into Malibu and was done in 95. Both are copyright protected under Scott Cattanach.

This was one of a group of characters created in one of my sketch books, that I did some digital coloring on. I have always loved working with monsters and creatures. And of course there is true fun in working with zombies. the template is already there, the world, everyone you see. Just take a little off here and there and keep the essence of the individual. This sketch was from one of my 2002 sketchbooks where I was working directly with color pencils for sketching. It gives little room to go back. An exercise in knowing what you are laying down. This fellow just has that special something.

Growing up in Ventura, the beach and surfing were pretty important parts of my life. I continued my surfing adventures when in the Air Force stationed in Goldsboro NC. Only about an hour from the beach and having every other day off, my friend Ray and myself spent a very large portion of our time surfing the different beaches along the North Carolina coast. Cape Hatteras was one of the most incredible beaches and swells I have had the joy of surfing. Paddling out the day before the eye of Hurricane Hugo hit was probably one of the craziest things I have done. Category 4 hurricane by the time it hit, category 5 before land fall, there was not a lot to surf being about 4 to 5 foot chop with insane winds. I had to drag my 9' Dewey Weber down the beach as it was impossible to carry. It spun like a propeller behind me. How the boards stayed on top of the car the ride back is beyond me. How I dodged the car that lost control in front of me and started cranking out 360's at 75 mph in blinding rain is a miracle.
As my art career needed time to perfect my skills I had to spend less time in the water. Now living in the pacific northwest in the Puget Sound there is not much surfing to do. I am in the slow process of starting a small side business with my artwork. A lot of the designs revolve around surfing, skating and graffiti. This illustration is one of the t-shirt designs I have completed.

As cartooning is rooted in my heart, I blended into the graffiti world quite easily. Truth is one of my best friends badgered me for quite a few years before I gave into doing graff with him. Well as a result I am still doing some amount of graff to this day. I am spending more of my energies trying to take what I have learned from the streets and transform it to business. I started writing back in 96 or 97 while living in Ventura ca. I mainly worked on stickers that I freely gave away by the hundreds and spread like a disease across a large area of so cal. To this day I still get requests for some of my oldest stickers from people I do not know. It has been a great experience meeting and getting to know the different artist I have been exposed to through graffiti. The level of thought and creativity that is put into works by the artists I have known I truly inspiring. I would say this design is a tribute to my love for the streets and the people I have met on and from them. This SDC (social deviant culture-or-scott david cattanach) city block illustration has my love for detailed illustrations and cartooning intertwined with the respect I have for the different graff artists I have had the pleasure of meeting and calling friends. This piece is not quite done, it has some more rendering to go. I am using this as a progress piece and will update with finished piece when it is completed.

I love drawing goofy cartoon characters. Monkeys have been a sketchbook focus for a couple years now. This is one of the better characters from those drawings. This will be used for a marketing piece at the printing co. that I work for. I have the ability to use my own artwork when creating our marketing.

I enjoy working in a wide range of styles and mediums. I have a deep root in cartooning and comics above everything else. I have a large amount of stories that I am trying to work and finish among other work. I would say I use the wide range of styles to keep myself interested and not burned out.

I grew up in Ventura CA, but now live in Everett WA up near seattle. I work as a graphic designer for a print company. While working on all of my other work on the side.
